A gunman has died after shooting himself in the head outside the White House on Saturday.
Police in Washington DC confirmed that an “adult male has been declared deceased.”
The statement comes two hours after the Secret Service tried to calm panicked reports of a shooter along the White House’s north fence.
The shooting sparked panic inside the building, with staff and journalists told to take shelter.
President Donald Trump was away at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, and was scheduled to return Saturday afternoon.
The President later tweeted that the “Mainstream Media in US is being mocked all over the world. They’ve gone CRAZY!” It appears he was responding to several journalists who tweeted what was going on as it happened.
NBC’s White House correspondent Geoff Bennett said: “We’re sheltering in place at the White House briefing room.
“A report of ‘shots fired’ near North Lawn, per a U.S. Secret Service agent. Trying to learn more,” he said.
Soon after the incident, the Secret Service tweeted: “Secret Service personnel are responding to reports of a person who allegedly suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound along the north fence line of White House.
“‘No other reported injuries related to the incident.” Punch
