Lagos govt still interested in National Theatre – Ayorinde

Even as four of the six theatres being built by the Lagos State Government are due to be ready before the end of 2018, the Commissioner for Tourism, Culture and Arts, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, has said that the Akinwunmi Ambode administration is still interested in the National Theatre.

According to him, although the new theatres being built by the government will go a long way in boosting the drama and cinema experiences of Lagosians, everyone still owes the National Theatre the best it can get.

He said, “Nobody should be happy to keep the National Theatre in its present state. The Lagos State Government knows it deserves the best and we are committed to making it a jewel that it is supposed to be. You  know, there are usually papers to be sorted out here and there and once this is done, we will fulfil our vision about the National Theatre.”

Ayorinde made this known on Thursday during an interface with the media.

He said that the four theatres in Badagry, Igando, Epe and Opebi would be ready by the end of the year.

The two in Yaba and Ikorodu, he added, would be ready next year.

Ayorinde further noted that the government was renovating the Glover Hall in Lagos, while work was also ongoing at the new cultural hub in Onikan.

At the programme, also attended by the Permanent Secretary in the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Arts, Mr. Fola Adeyemi, Ayorinde explained that the tourism and cultural calendar just unfolded by the government was subject to quarterly review, as new and more programmes would be accommodated regularly.
