Delta crisis: Six more killed as violence escalates
No fewer than six persons have been reportedly killed in a renewed violence in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.
Sources told our correspondent that the incident took place in the early hours of Monday around Dumoruogbo, Dumurieh, Orumaroh and Jakpa Junction area of Effurun.
The area has been rocked by violent clashes since last two weeks following disagreements between some supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress.
It was learnt that six persons were killed at different spots in the area bringing the total number of those killed in the renewed crisis to 10.
Our correspondent learnt that three of the victims were shot dead in their homes while the remaining three were stabbed to death by unidentified youths in the area.
One of the victims identified as Onyema is believed to be involved in the lingering crisis in the community.
Meanwhile, soldiers and riot police have been drafted to the area to quell the rising clashes.
Spokesman for the police in the state, Andrew Aniamaka, confirmed the incident but said five persons were killed in Monday’s clash.
He also denied security officials were involved in the killings.
He said, “I was informed that five persons were killed in the clash. There’s no iota of truth in the allegation that security officials were involved in killing people. They are only there to maintain peace, and they won’t be involved in any form of extrajudicial killing.” Punch
